Not ordering enough paint for your decorating project can be very frustrating, but over ordering will mean you’re left with items you don’t need. You can minimize the chances of this happening by using our convenient paint calculator. While our advice is for guidance only, we would strongly recommend that you always check with your decorator before ordering or email customerservices@farrow-ball.com for further advice or assistance. Please note that we do not take doors, windows and alcoves into consideration when making our calculations.

Please also take into account the nature of the surface which you are painting beforehand. Porous walls are likely to require extra coats and vast colour transformations (i.e. white to black or black to white) are also likely to require a third coat. You can minimize the chance of this by using the correct undercoat.

The table below offers a guide to the maximum coverage for all our paint finishes. Coverage is dependent on thickness of application and surface. All product pages contain an interactive paint calculator to help you choose the right amount – please note this calculator is only suitable for calculating paint for walls only.

Preparing Surfaces
Proper surface preparation is key to helping you get the most from your chosen colour and finish.

• Make sure the surface you’re planning to paint is in good condition – clean, dry, and free of grease, mould or algae

• Fill or seal any large imperfections

The Farrow & Ball System
Our paint colours are renowned for their depth, complexity, and ability to respond extraordinarily to light. For an even, long-lasting finish, we recommend following the Farrow & Ball system:

• One coat of our Primer & Undercoat in the recommended tone

• Two coats of your chosen topcoat

For some surfaces, such as newly plastered and dry-lined walls, we recommend a diluted layer of your chosen Farrow & Ball topcoat colour, followed by two full coats.

To ensure the best finish, it’s important to let the recommended drying time pass between coats. We list the drying time for each finish on its individual product page, but please be aware that these can vary depending on factors like temperature, humidity, and the shade being applied.

All paint ships via FedEx and is usually delivered within 3 business days of order.

Farrow & Ball paint and papers may be picked up in store free of charge or delivered direct to the customer residence (charges apply). Please note that Farrow & Ball requires an adult signature for all deliveries, no exceptions.
